As a drummer, educator and producer, I found my obsession with music at the early age of 5. My formative years were spent drumming along to everything from Led Zeppelin to Bob Marley, soaking in as much of the language as possible before beginning my formal studies with Clark Seibold at age 13. In 2012, I graduated from Westfield State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and immediately took on the role of middle school music teacher in the opening year of NEASC accredited Commonwealth Academy in Springfield, MA.
When I’m not busy touring with my band, electronic outfit Mammal Dap, I enjoy genre-hopping and supporting folk-rock songwriters like Ryan Hommel and Heather Maloney. My early touring experiences began with psych-folk band Sun Parade and Senegalese hip-hop/world-fusion ensemble Gokh-Bi System. I have also had the pleasure of playing with members of contemporary funk/jazz icons Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, The Motet, Turkuaz, Kung Fu and many more.
With over 20 years of playing experience and 8 years of teaching experience, I strive to bring a fresh, passionate and focused approach to lessons. Lessons are personalized to your unique experience and musical taste to develop creativity and musicality — building fundamentals and technique while not letting those overshadow the joy of making music.
Matt has been playing and studying music for 17 years. In early 2001 he began his studies with the trumpet until 2004 when he bought his first drum set. Matt was self-taught on drums until 2008 when he began studying with jazz greats Bob Gullotti and Matt Wilson. In 2010 he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst to receive a BM in Jazz & African American music. Currently, Matt is playing with the nationally touring act, Bella’s Bartok. They have taken him all over the country and has shared the stage with acts such as The Indigo Girls, TOO MANY ZOOZ, Rubblebucket, The Suitcase Junket, Red Baraat, and many more. He’s been teaching students on and off for the past 6 years.
